Gosford sailors shine at Airlie nationals

Peter McIntosh, Tuesday, 6 January 2009

JUNIORS:

GOSFORD Sabot sailors Kurt Hansen and Lindsay Pike comfortably defended their national junior title, while teammates picked up both senior and junior runner-up spots after five days of competition at Airlie Beach, Queensland.
Kurt, 11, and Lindsay, 10, won seven out of 10 races and recorded two seconds in moderate conditions and 1m swell. Once the drops came into play the pair in Need for Speed finished on nine points, 13 ahead of the runner-up.
``I'm thrilled,'' said Kurt. ``I came here not expecting to win every heat like last year because the rest of the fleet had improved so the competition was exciting.''
It was a gutsy effort by the youngsters after the skipper  overcame a bout of illness.  ``On day two I was feeling sick and had to go to hospital but I felt better the next day and got back into it,'' he said.
At the next nationals Kurt will advance to the senior division while Lindsay will team up with dad Brian in a 29er.
Gosford juniors had even more to celebrate in the 14-strong fleet. Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes in Double Diamond were locked in a tense tussle for second spot with South Queenslanders Tom Sagunto and Ezra Pritchard right up until the final race. When it was all over the two boats were each on 22 points and the girls from Gosford won on countback thanks to a win in race seven.
``It was really challenging, we had a couple of tip-ins but managed to do just enough to beat Guided Missile to second place overall,'' said Sophie, 10. ``We're really looking forward to racing at Gosford next year.''
Teammates Blake and Ashleigh Robson in Black Pearl were always in the picture and picked up a trophy for fourth.

SENIORS

THE competition was even hotter than the weather in the 58-strong senior fleet where Matt Graham finished runner-up to Sydney's Felix Grech in Blue Fusion.
``I'm pretty happy about how it all went because this year the standard of competition was very high and made it tougher for everyone,'' Matt said.
``Only three people won two races including the winner, myself and Victorian James Oliver.''
Third place went to South Queensland's Aidan Gecko in The Wobbly Boot.
This season is Matt's last in Sabot competition.
He won four junior titles and two runner-up trophies at senior level. A talented skier, Graham will concentrate fully on mogul skiing.
Other Gosford seniors experienced both spectacular highs and frustrating lows. The number 34 was unlucky Vardon Robson in Thunderstruck, who three times finished in that position, while in two other heats Vardon crossed the line in second spot. He was rewarded with 17th overall. The second best overall Gosford senior was newcomber Coen Comadira in Conquistador, two spots ahead of Vardon. Gemma Hughes finished 10th and 12th in races for a 25th overall placing. Matt Lang in Slippery Little Sucker suffered some sail problems but thrilled teammates with a ninth placing just one behind Matt Graham in one race. Other Gosford results were: Elliot Clayton (29th, best race 11th), Eliza Hansen (32nd, best 15th), Sophie Lahey (40th, best place 9th), George Stent (43rd) and Roy Harrison 49th.
Vardon was presented with his Lionel Shipway Medallion for competing in six national Sabot regattas.

Training day pictorial

Peter McIntosh, Friday, 21 November 2008

Northern Zone sailors had plenty of fun trying out radio-link training helmets at a recent training day with Lauren at Toronto. Thanks to Brian Hansen for supplying these pics. Now if only mums and dads could get hold of these helmets to pass on a few choice words of advice when things are not going according to plan ...

Matt spearheads Gosford sweep

MATT Graham achieved the unprecedented feat of five consecutive NSW Sabot titles as Gosford sailors cleaned up the major trophies at Georges River 16-Foot Sailing Club at the weekend.
Matt, who just recently turned 14, won the senior title, his sixth overall, with a dominant performance in Black Label.
He won eight of the 10 heats over two weekends, well clear of Felix Grech, of Hunters Hill.
Third place went to Lawrence Wakefield, of Drummoyne.
``I'm pretty stoked,'' Matt said afterwards. ``I didn't think about the five straight titles too much, just one race at a time.''
On the final day Matt displayed his never-say-die attitude when he recovered from a false start and roared home to win from seventh spot.
It was a race he did not have to compete in to win overall due to an established points advantage.
``This will probably be my last year in Sabots, after the national titles at Airlie Beach in early January,'' said Matt.
``After that I'm thinking of sailing more for fun because mogul skiing will be the main focus.''
Long term, he has already mapped out a journey to the winter Olympics in Russia in 2014.
Twenty-eight senior Sabot sailors competed, with the next best Gosford performer being Vardon Robson (10th) in Thunderstruck. Regular high placings won him the first on handicap trophy.
Clubmate Gemma Hughes in Charmed (14th) was third on handicap, thanks largely to an excellent third in the final race.
Eliza Hansen (15th) won an encouragement award and Matt Lang showed promise with several midfield placings.

Juniors score trifecta

GOSFORD Sailing Club had even more to celebrate at the NSW Sabot titles with a trifecta in the 13-strong two-up junior fleet.
National champion Kurt Hansen and crew Lindsay Pike dominated by winning all but one heat in Need for Speed. That heat was won by runners-up Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes in Double Diamond, who keenly protected the second spot lead they established over the first weekend.
Rising stars and clubmates Blake and Ashleigh Robson in Black Pearl finished third overall, comfortably clear of the fourth boat on points.
To have the northern zone take out all three top junior placings was unprecedented and bodes well for the juniors as they tune up for the nationals.
The wind at Botony Bay was excellent for sailing with southerlies ranging from 10-18 knots and strong tides adding an extra challenge. Kurt, 11, summed up the feeling of leading a trifecta. ``That was mad, plenty of wind, close competition, really cool,'' he said

SABOT SUCCESS! with J.McIntosh

Peter McIntosh, Right, Tuesday, 6 May 2008

Essential tips that to help ensure a positive,
    stress-free day out
:
  • Prepare for sailing the night before - take half an hour to organise nutritious lunch & snacks, water, spare wet gear & boat equipment, racing watch - check weather forecast to decide on clothes/sails etc
  • Arrive and rig early - have a checklist and tick off: "wind indicators, tape on stays, bucket, sponge, water bottle.." - double-check rigging!
  • Pay close attention at briefing - understand course, starting time and procedures, rules, changes to the rules, wind direction & prediction, tide & swell - ask questions if unsure
  • Arrive at start line early to test conditions and develop starting/racing plan - figure out the true wind, 'strongest' side of the bay, most direct route to the top mark, better side on starting line etc
  • Respect the rules and competitors - race fair
  • Be clear and adament about your rights - don't let other sailors get away with false play or bad behaviour - at larger regattas, many will try to intimidate by yelling and threatening; ignore them or protest if necessary but stay calm and focussed on the race - also try and get a witness if protesting
  • If falling behind, losing position or coming last, banish any negative thoughts straight away, look ahead for chance of a lift or gust, keep the boat adjusted to the wind (perhaps vang, cunningham or outhaul needs tightening?), check minor details of the boat such as raised centreboard or dragging weed, observe the other boats to see how the sail may be better trimmed - stay positive! - perhaps be daring and try a change of course
  • Enjoy it!!!
  • Thank committee on finish boat - remember, without their help, there wouldn't be a race
  • When derigging, take time to put everything away in situ and keep a record of breakages so that nothing is lost or broken for the next sailing adventure - keep a log book of every training session and race to learn & gain the most from your experience

LATEST REPORT - Captain Kurt and crew Matthew find warp speed to win national title

GOSFORD junior Sabot sailors Kurt Hansen and Matthew Lang are the new national champions after completely dominating the championship series on Sydney Harbour.
The boys, aged 10, in Need for Speed, achieved a rare feat by winning all six heats of the championship in addition to the orientation race.  It is believed there has not been such an emphatic performance by a two-up crew since the early seventies.
And NSW Northern Zone can further celebrate an overall junior team victory as its sailors filled enough top placings to secure the coveted trophy.
The other highlight of this years 44th championship was second placing in seniors overall to former national junior champion Matt Graham, 13, in Back in Black, behind new champion Victorian sailor George Davis in Synergy.  It was an excellent result for Matt in his first year as a senior competing against many sailors two years older. Third place in seniors on scratch went to Southern Queensland's Sean Ott in Guided Missle.
In juniors, Kurt's junior victory was all the more remarkable because he has been sailing for only two seasons and his crewmate, Matthew, had only a season's experience since graduating from his clubs sailing school.
``The two of them have a fierce determination that belies their age as they are always focused on the task at hand, said Kurt's dad Brian.
``As middleweights the 15 knot average nor-east and sou-east breeze suited them but several times they had to work hard to make their way through the field, picking off boats one by one.
The boys managed to win several of the races by more than a two-minute margin.
Kurt, from Gosford Primary School, is also a primary school district swimming champion in breast-stroke, butterfly and backstroke. His fitness, plus the intensive after-school training he put in on Brisbane Water leading up to the nationals, assisted greatly.
Next season the champions  go separate ways, with Matthew keen to skipper in juniors with younger brother Aston as crew. Kurt will find a new crew and looks forward to defending his title at the next nationals at Airlie Beach, in the Whitsundays.
``The standard of the inter-state competition has been excellent and the conditions on Sydney Harbour difficult with big tides and the wave effect from the cyclone swell, said Kurt.
``Im stoked to win. Its been great to have been regularly competing against Matt Graham at club level and training with him. Our coaches Lauren Jefferies and Richard Scarr have been a big help.
Gosford made it a double in juniors when in Vardon Robson and Lindsay Pike in Thunderstruck finished second overall on scratch.
And their clubmates Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes in Predator (fifth overall), Bradley Leicester and Codie Caldecoat in Afterburn (sixth), Blake Robson and Ashleigh Robson in Black Pearl and Ben Luithle and Aston Lang in Rococo all helped bring home the teams trophy.
In seniors other top overall performers included Jessica Hansen in Pretty n Pink (7th) and Tim Dey in Nos (10th, 2nd on handicap).
A proud moment also arrived for Gemma Hughes when she picked up her Lionel Shipway medallion for competing in Sabots at the past six national championships. Medallions also went to Southern NSW sailors Jackson Evans, Ravi Raj and Declan Rielly. Southern NSW's Greta Quealy and Elliott Collins in Fast and Furious were the junior handicap winners and in seniors the trophy went to Declan Rielly in On Dec.
(A special thank you to John and Karen Payne for putting so much time into capturing so much of the action and supplying all the great pictures)

EARLIER REPORT:
Excellent early results for Gosford sailors at nationals
NORTHERN Zone Sabot sailors staked strong claims for national championship titles in both junior and senior divisions with top results in the early heats on Sydney Harbour.
In the junior division, Gosford Kurt Hansen and Matthew Lang, in Need for Speed are in the box seat after dominating the first five of the championship's six heats, winning several by a big margin in moderate winds. Several times the boys fought their way up through the fleet after less than ideal starts.
Their clubmates in Thunderstruck, Vardon Robson and Lindsay Pike, set up a Gosford double with second placings in the first three heats, a fourth placing in the fourth, and fifth in the fifth.
In the hotly contested senior division Matthew Graham, in Back in Black and Jessica Hansen in Pretty n Pink have each placed first in heats and recorded other high placings.
Their strongest rivals appear to be Southern Queensland's Sean Ott in Guided Missile and Victorian George Davis in Synergy.
Matt won Sunday's second heat from Guided Missle in 15-knot northerlies by more than a minute but the following day Sean reversed the order by a similar margin.
On Saturday, Matt placed fourth in the first heat behind Southern Queensland heat winner Shelly White in Stay Tuned.
And on Wednesday, Jess Hansen joined the main title contenders with line honours in heat four backing up earlier placings of fourth and eighth. Synergy and Guided Missle placed second and third in heat four.
Gosford clubmate Tim Dey is not too far behind in Nos, his consistent high placings including a fifth, sixth and seventh. Patrick Menner in Flashes of Brilliance has been a big improver to finish 14th in heat three and 15th in heat five.
Provisional results from heat five show another win for Synergy, followed by Victorian teammate Jeremy O'Connell in Blitz and SNSW sailor Thomas Jensen in Supersonic. Matt managed sixth spot in that heat, while rival Sean Ott was 12th.
A total of 64 Sabots from as far afield as Tasmania and North Queensland are battling out in the senior division.
Others to impress in the field of 20 juniors included Bradley Leicester and Codie Caldecoat in Afterburn (fourth, fifth, seventh) and Blake and Ashleigh Robson in Black Pearl (twice fifth, twice seventh). Ben Luithle and Aston Lang in Rococo were unlucky when a stay broke when they were racing among the leaders in heat two but finished ninth in two heats.
Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes in Predator improved from 10th placing in heat one to two sixth placings in the following heats but were unfortunately over the line at the start of heat four. In heat five they were provisionally the third northern zone boat home in 9th spot.
With so many Northern Zone sailors regularly in the top 10 placings, they must be strong contenders for the best performing zone team trophy.
The excellent championship series, hosted very impressively by Vaucluse, winds up on Saturday.
The series began with an Invitation Race on Friday in which the Northern Zone sailors made their intentions known. In that warm-up race, Need for Speed finished first and Thunderstruck 3rd in juniors. In seniors Back in Black was third behind Guided Missile and Sydney's Lawrence Wakefield in Purple Haze. The consistent Pretty 'n Pink was sixth in that race.

State Sprints 20007

State Sprints at Vaucluse

Some of the seniors warming up for the state sprints. Picture: John Payne

GOSFORD juniors picked up a double at the Sabot State Sprint Titles on Sydney Harbour on Sunday.
Kurt Hansen and Matthew Lang backed up their recent long race format state titles win with first place in the short race format sprints championship.
In light south-easterlies, the boys in Need For Speed won all three races.
Their Gosford clubmates Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes sailed consistently in Predator for second placing overall (second and two third placings), followed by Drummoyne rivals Caitlin and Jessica Tames in 2 Sea Gals.
Other great Gosford results in juniors were Vardon Robson and Lindsay Pike 4th, Blake Robson and Ashleigh Robson 5th, and Benjamin Luithle and Ashton Lang 6th.
Meanwhile in seniors, with the first two races sailed in less than eight knots, it was always going to be tough. Gosford state title holder Matt Graham in Back in Black had to claw his way back from 14th to third in the first sprint race. In the second race the wind eased to under five knots and the course was shortened, with Matt finishing fifth.
After lunch it was back to 8-12 knots. Matt had to win the race and finish five places ahead of Sydney leader Felix Grech in Shake a Leg to win. When Felix rounded the last mark in seventh position it looked like Matt had done enough when he won the heat. But his rival took advantage of a right-hand wind shift to finish third, relegating Matt to runner-up.
Other top 10 placings in seniors included Gosford's Jessica Hansen fifth and Tim Dey equal 9th. Eliza Hansen was 11th, Alex Hunter 14th, Patrick Menner 15th, Sean Payne 16th, Gemma Hughes 18th, Tom O'Donnell 19th, Jake O'Donnell 20th.

SENIORS:

Matt Graham wrapped up his first northern NSW zone senior championship
in fine style when he won the final two heats by big margins over the
weekend.
Matt, in Back in Black, made the most of the shifty breeze and tidal
influence in the first heat on the Manning River course on
Saturday and
the following day at Wallis Lake, Forster, he broke away from early
challengers to once again win by well over a minute.
Combined with Matt's junior zone championship victories, he has
notched up an unprecedented six titles at that level.
And with only one heat remaining in the Gosford club championship,
he is
about to win his seventh victory in seven years.
Meanwhile, the rest of the senior fleet raced extremely closely, with
only 35 seconds between the second-placed and seventh-placed
Sabots in
the final zone heat.
Before the heat Matt had all but wrapped up the championship but there
was keen interest in overall second spot with the points table showing
it could be claimed by at least three contenders, all girls.
Gemma Hughes in Charmed eventually came through behind Matt,
having made
a big comeback after slipping back early in the race. Her main
challengers were clubmates Patrick Menner (third in final heat, fifth
overall), Eliza Hansen (second in heat 5, 3rd overall) and Heidi Graham
(fourth overall).
Sean Payne showed great improvement with a third placing in heat five
(sixth overall).
A few of the seniors will be moving on next season, Heidi after nine
years, Sean, Tom, Pat, Jake and Andrew and we wish them well.
Two newcomers to the championship, Liam in Around the Buoys and
Matt in
Xtatic are now traveling on the circuit and we warmly welcome them.

JUNIORS:

In the junior championship, despite an upset fourth
placing in
the final heat, national champions Kurt Hansen and Matt Lang did
enough in Need for Speed to win the championship with a win in the
penultimate heat. Second place overall went to the consistent
Vardon Robson and
Lindsay Pike in Thunderstruck.
Rapid improvers Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes in Predator
finished the series on a high note, by leading the final heat from
start to
finish. They finished third overall in the championship.
Blake and Ashleigh Robson in Black Pearl showed excellent improvement
this season finishing the championship with two third placings for
fourth overall.
The boys in Need for Speed have this season won all major
championshipsclub, zone, state and national  following in the
footsteps of Matt who
achieved this two years straight.
The winds were light to moderate south-westerlies.
